LYRICS
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

A message from Toby about printing the lyrics:

I've long-resisted requests for a full listing of lyrics on the website... in fact, I initially resisted printing full lyrics in CD booklets too. My thinking has always been that they are lyrics, not poems, and they're meant to be heard as part of a song rather than read.

Times change and so do people. Some people can't understand what I'm singing or simply enjoy the written word. So in the last two Horse Stories records the liner notes have contained full lyrics... which brings me to the other reason I have been against on-line lyrics: If you bought the CD, rather than burned it, you'd have the lyrics. But people who've bought downloads of the latest record have now started requesting lyrics, so fair enough.

We'll start off with the "Everyone's A Photographer" lyrics and I'll do my best to put the rest on-line soon
(all are now online). As any poor soul who's played in a band with me will attest, I don't really keep a very strict record of lyrics, so this may involve me having to dig through old notebooks - not my favorite pastime, but probably healthy... kind of like going to the dentist. Ho hum.
I will also attempt to write some kind of introduction to the lyrics printed here, so you can get some idea of what I was trying to achieve on each record lyrically.

Thanks for caring. Enjoy.

EVERYONE'S A PHOTOGRAPHER
(2005)

"I wrote almost all of this record whilst living in a tiny flat in London, with my girlfriend at the time (now my wife). We really didn't have much money and I didn't like London at all. She would go to work every day, or travel for work, and between tours I would sit in that tiny flat writing or just trying to figure out what to do with myself.
As a result, the lyrics wound up feeling very domestic to me and the working title of the record was 'A Simple Home' (based on the Flaubert story 'A Simple Heart'). I was a bit miserable, but home was still a really great place, it felt safe and loving. There's never a direct link between lyrics and my life, but it's just a mood I guess, and to me these songs paint these little domestic tales, not necessarily about anyone - for better or worse."

1. 24/45

(Instrumental)

2. (Too Many People Fall for the Same) Lies

The wreck of a home
Projected nightly on your own
So call all the dogs
And gather the family for talks

Too many people fall for the same lies
Too many people fall for the same lies
Time after time

Part of you knows
Never to ask or propose
So pile in the car
And ride it into the dark

Too many people fall for the same lies
Too many people fall for the same lies

3. Firewall

You come on like a firewall
You come on like a fire
You come on like a firewall
And I won’t put you out
No I won’t pull you down.

Meet me in the garden at night
Meet me in the garden
Meet me in the garden at night
And I won’t pull you out
No I won’t put you down

To see you in the morning light
To see you in the morn
To see you in the morning light
Could brighten up my eye
Could brighten up my eye

4. The Wheels

Choose a lie
Tell it fast
You don’t want to be the last
To say it for
One and all
Your mother and your father know

The wheels won’t slow
The wheels won’t slow

Choose a life
Live it fast
There’s no future in the past
But your brother and
Your best friend know
You still don’t know where to go
And

The wheels won’t slow
The wheels won’t slow

Don’t you know...
Don’t you know...

Choose a line
Walk it hard
Don’t you wander off the path
They’ll leave you out, all alone
Wondering ‘bout the after-show

The wheels won’t slow
The wheels won’t slow

Don’t you know...
Don’t you know...

5. Bloody Time of the Year

Flash your eyes, like a photograph
I’m a slave in them
Turn your hand, like a dullen’d knife
I won’t be sane again

Cause it’s a bloody time of the year
It’s a bloody time of the year
It’s a bloody time of the year
When you’re in love

Lash my hands, to the post and rail
Seems the thing to do
I’ll fix my smile, like a broken dial
Just to see me through

It’s a bloody time of the year
It’s a bloody time of the year
It’s a bloody time of the year
When you’re in love

So, I go
Too far, too slow
Again

Flash your eyes, like a photograph
I’m a slave in them
Blind I’ll run, for the only one
Can make me feel again

Cause it’s a bloody time of the year
It’s a bloody time of the year
It’s a bloody time of the year
When you’re in love
When you’re in love
When you’re in love

So, I go
Too far, too slow
So, I go
Too far, too slow
Again

Cause it’s a bloody time of the year
It’s a bloody time of the year
It’s a bloody time of the year
When you’re in love
When you’re in love
When you’re in love

6. There is a Heart on The Harrow

When the cold autumn light
Hits the old buildings right
She’ll find a way to cover up the grey
Anyhow

When the stores are all closed up tight
And the homes are burning bright
She’ll find a way to cover up the grey
She’ll light the way, but I am not afraid

Of a heart falling down
Of a heart falling down

When the only thing going right
Is the sound of a neighbor’s fight
She’ll light the way, but I am not afraid
She’ll light the way, but I am not afraid

Of a heart falling down
Of a heart falling down
Of a heart.

7. (Horn Crash)

(Instrumental)

8. You Explained Away Everything

Sad scenes at the break of day
She’s dragging out the bags again
She’s got a lot of things going on
And you are only one.

Talking like a paperboy
Throwing headlines and nothing more
Somehow you’re figuring out
She never liked it how...

You explained away everything
Like a wrong number again
And you closed out every night
With some silly little
Fight
Fight

Phone calls from miles away
Everybody got something to say
You got a lot of things going on
If only she were one.

So ho-hum and a bottle of rum
This is called having fun
Strange way of figuring out
She never liked it how...

You explained away everything
Like a wrong number again
And you closed out every night
With some silly little
Fight
Fight
Fight

9. The Ten

It’s hard to stay awake
When you’re on the Interstate
And you’re finally alone
‘Cause she’s driving you home

Someone had to drive
So you drank to be polite
Now the tyres’ lonely moan
Is like a conversation going on

The cops won’t stop you know
’Cause you’re heading out of town
And the lights slowly spread apart
Till you’re driving through the dark

You try to catch a glimpse
Of a sign between your blinks
Then you see a name you know
You’re already home

She says
“Come on in...
…You can’t sleep in this thing”

Now you’re staring at the sheets
In those gentle waves of sleep
And as into your arms she falls
You wonder why you went out at all
…at all.

10. Tonight… On the Radio

The weight of all the world
Has fallen on a girl
She doesn’t even know
But it’s about to show

Later on outside
You’ve waved off all the flies
And the only buzz that’s heard
Is a thousand little words

Tonight
Tonight
Tonight

And in a day or even more
Sprawled out on this floor
Will the morning light still find
You and I?
Just like...

Tonight
Tonight
Tonight

...and on the radio
Plays a song
That you both know

She says she doesn’t know the words
But she’s humming every verse
So it comes as no surprise
When she sings them through a smile

Tonight
Tonight
Tonight
Tonight

11. Follow The Thames

Corrode out
Hollow your heart
And mind, you won’t need them tonight.

This Friday night
Wreck at the bend
Don’t need, know that you’re on the mend.

So I follow your eyes, once round the room.
I follow the stars, right to the moon.
And follow the Thames, all the way home.

Call it a night
We’re all alone

All the riders fall, around here.
All the riders fall, this year.

To follow your eyes...
Follow the stars...
And follow the Thames, all the way home

So I follow your eyes, once round the room.
I follow the stars, right to the moon
And follow the Thames, all the way home

Sometimes it seems
The roads and the streets
Belong to those on the run

12. Man O’ Holes

There’s a little hole
Running through my heart
About the size of everyone I know

I can feel the cold breeze
Rushing through it
Whenever
You walk by my side

But it don’t mean I love you
Any less at all
That little hole is where you got in

There’s a little hole
Running to my brain
About the shape of everyone I know

I can feel the cold light
Rush into it
Whenever
You are in my sight

But it don’t mean I love you
Any less at all
That little hole is where you got in

And all these holes
Grow and grow and grow
But it won’t ever show

It don’t mean I love you
Any less at all
The little hole is where you got in

13. This Weather Will Go

I hear you coming
Your high heels knocking
On pavements of cold stone

You’re late for the weekend
And so many meetings
But what are you really on?

You scream like an ambulance
Falling on down the stairs
But what are you really on?

Like a cloud’s shadow
You roll through a narrow hall
But what are you really on?

Just like this weather
You’ll go
Just like the weather
We’ll talk about you all day long

Just like this weather
You’ll go
Just like the weather
We’ll talk about you all day long

This weather will go
This weather will go

ONE HUNDRED WAVES
(2003)

"The first two Horse Stories records had quite distinct lyrical themes. Travelling Mercies was very road-based and although the idea of movement stuck with me, during a period where I'd re-ignited my interest in reading about shipwrecks and other sea stories, the water presented itself in many of the lyrics I was writing for One Hundred Waves.
Ironically though, the song off this record that probably got the most attention, 'Push My Buttons', is decidedly land-based. An ode to difficult-love, the melody is so gut-wrenching I can only attribute it to the fact that I wrote the basis for it after finally turning off the television on the morning of September 11th, 2001.
'Chanty' is possibly the weirdest thing I've ever written. I've been asked if it's "an old Irish folk song?". It was written whilst screwing around on a very distorted electric guitar, it came from somewhere I can't call up at will. Oh, and it's written from the perspective of the Devil. That was a strange day.
All in all, when I read over these lyrics now, they seem so sad. I may never really understand why, as One Hundred Waves was written during a very happy period of my life. That being said, I was moving in with a girl for the first time, a great reception for Travelling Mercies came with new pressures and the world was on the brink of war... I guess it was a pretty scary time too.

P.S. Fun fact: The use of a single 'fuckin'' in the 'Amber Lights' lyrics earnt the record a WARNING sticker for 'coarse language' in Australia. It remains the only curse word I've ever written in a song."

PUSH MY BUTTONS

Stuck down in your rut, and open like a cut
‘cause you push my buttons, baby
And wake me if you can, I may be dead again
‘cause it feels like nothing to me.

You’ve got me deep in debt, ‘n you come on with the threats
But you must owe something to me
So take all you can steal, you know I only feel
When you push my buttons, baby.

‘n oh, the road
Oh, the road
It follows you around
It follows you around
And you can’t, slow down.

And you push my buttons, baby.

BOTTLED TOWN

Come in on a Sunday night
With the rocks in my head
Said “You look such a fright,
just go back to bed.”

Said she’s running away
To that town in the rain.

Come in on a Sunday night
In her coat threadbare
Said “Every living thing must cry,
this heartless sky don’t care.”

So let the rain fall down
On this bottled town
Just so she has to hang around.

Come in on a Sunday night
Woke me from the dead
Said “I really gotta go this time,
I’d take you if I could.”

So let the rain fall down
On this bottled town
Just so she has to hang around
Just so she has to hang around, this town.

AMBER LIGHTS

This lonely little voice,
is filling up my phone
Now every little choice,
is ringin’ in my bones

Tonight, beside, amber lights.

It’s midnight by my watch,
so take what you have not lost
Mistakes cost you time,
and it’s fuckin’ with my mind

Tonight, beside, amber lights.

But the streetlight held you in one place
And in my mind it holds your face
So tight
Goodnight, amber lights.

This lonely little voice,
is filling up my phone
But we got no other choice,
‘cause yer miles away from home

And those bright, amber lights.

But the streetlight glow all goes to waste
And in my mind still holds your face
So tight
Goodnight, amber lights.

THE SHORELINE

The shoreline, has shrunk again
To be home, is at the end
So rock me slow, while I am safe below.

Friends will, hold me up
And force forth, another cup
They all adore, that I pretend so poor.

And she’ll be the last one to know.

So lie down, and how I’ve lied
To keep, good, eyes so dry
And rock me forth, as I pretend so poor.

Got my head up, looking for love
Won’t let it catch me again.

And she’ll be the last one to know.

I pretend so poor.

THE ROCKS AND THE WAVES

Turn the locks, on an ordinary life
All my worst, lies are promises
But she’s not all the things she does or says
Right before, we both hit the bed.

n somebody, always knows a better way home,
for you
But the rocks and the waves, broke your heart
The rocks and the waves, broke your heart.

So turn your back, on an ordinary life
Cut the slack, tied to promises
Then we’re only all we’ve done and said
Right before, we both hit the bed.

n somebody, always knows a better way home,
for you
But the rocks and the waves, broke your heart
The rocks and the waves, broke your heart.
And we’re miles apart.

The rocks and the waves
The rocks and the waves
That broke your heart
They’re miles apart.

THE CALMING EFFECTS… OF RUM AND TRUE FRIENDSHIP

(Instrumental)

CHANTY (FOR A DROWNING SINNER)

When the roll of a dice, it takes your precious life
Don’t say your silly prayers, to me
I’m not God or a man, I cannot understand
Those pretty little words, you need.

When the rise of a wave, takes you to your grave
Don’t throw yer dyin’ arms, t’ward me
I’m as cold as the sand, and all yer Ten Commands
Don’t mean a single word, to thee.

When the gates of the south, open like a mouth
I’ll greet you baring all, your greed
In my eyes will reside, the years of foolish pride
You bore from land to land, by sea.

Oh, oh, oh… Remember me.

NORTH & SOUTH

There’s no way, that you’ll be back tonight
So don’t say, one more little lie
‘cause I can see, through you to the North
And I won’t be, there when you open your mouth
To send me on my way.

Cold days, warm me for the nights
n old ways, are passing with the time
Can you see, through me to the South?
There’s no need, to stay, or to scream, or to shout
My hearing’s not the same.

The long trail, will strengthen our resolve
You can’t fail, just for growing old
n when we see, from North unto the South
There won’t be, more to figure out
Just earth in which to lay.

LEARNING TO PROVE

When the bridge won’t take the load
We’ll just find another road
To walk you through.

And when the wind is at your chest
You’ll just see me at my best
To walk us through
I still want you.

Lord don’t take me now, I’m still learning how to prove
I still want you.

TRAVELLING MERCIES (FOR TROUBLED PATHS)
(2001/2002)

"There's not a whole lot I can say about the lyrics for this record, other than I wrote it all after first moving to Los Angeles from Melbourne, Australia. It was a really exciting, crazy, emotion-filled time. I started playing with Clint (basically the other half of Horse Stories), which inspired me greatly. I met my future wife. I did tons of weird, ok, shitty, great, odd gigs.

Travelling was certainly on my mind, but so too was the image of the car generally. You drive everywhere in Los Angeles and on top of that, there's plenty of interesting places to drive through throughout California and the surrounding states.

I specifically remember thinking of the key line in "Radio" sitting in the back of my brother's car, staring out the window along the 5 freeway on the way up towards San Francisco.

There are some experiences as a writer that you just can't create or re-create - no matter how hard you try. For me, this time was chock-full of them."

NIGHT FALLS

When the day is gone, and the night falls,
she will too.
But when the sun is up, and the night is gone,
she is too.

And all I can see, is the road.
Yeah all I can see, is the road.

She won’t stop on a penny or a dime,
because she swears she’s through with me this time.

Yeah all I can see, is the road.

‘Cause the suitcase in my bedroom stares me down,
as if to say ‘You’ll find another town’.
But then the sun will fall, the night will come,
and she will too.

When all I could see, was the road.
Yeah all I could see, was the road.

ON YOUR SIDE

Lying all fragile, like an atom bomb in bed
She left me with, this sweet song in my head
And wake me just, to hum it once again
I'm loosing sleep, like all my old friends

She's never tired and I'm on your side

And when you think, I've left you like a bed
Just hear me in, that sweet song in your head

I've tried and tried, to be on your side

But the fall will come when the phone rings me in
and I pick it up and tell you where I've been

She never minds, and I'm on your side

But the fall will come when the rain runs me in
and I dry myself and tell you where I've been

She stays inside, and I'm on your side
No way to hide, I'm on your side

CHASE

He packed all those feelings,
except for the lingering doubt.
It hung from the ceiling,
as he walked from that faded house
Ready to shout, to shout it out.
Yeah he’s ready to shout…

He was humming that thing,
that she used to sing, in the shower.
He didn’t know the words,
but the tune would just lurk, for hours.
And he’s ready to shout, to shout it out.
Yeah he’s ready to shout…

Do d’ doo doo…

It took fifteen miles,
but those doubts caught him out on the drive.
As he sped through the lights,
they crept into his mind, for the night.
Well he’s ready to fight, to fight it out.
Yeah he’s ready to shout…

Do d dooo…

RADIO

So you know,
I’m filling up and feeling down.
And so you know,
I’m picking up your signal in towns…

Where I don’t wanna go,
but you don’t wanna know, where I’ve been.
But what I wanna know,
is why you wouldn’t show, me a thing.

I’m coming in and out like a radio,
on a country road, I know.
Fading in and out like a radio,
on a country road, and so…
Turn me up
Yeah turn me up.

I’m coming in and out like a radio,
on a country road, I know.
Fading in and out like a radio,
on a country road, and so…
Turn me up
Yeah turn me up
Turn me up
… or turn me off.

IT’S NOT A RAMBLE, THAT’S JUST THE WAY SHE TAKS

(Instrumental)

ONLY CHILD

Your company is priceless
I hang on every line
But I know I’ll lose this
‘cause I’m an only child

For all the ones who’ve loved me
there’s ten more in my mind
But I’m lost in a memory
still an only child

But I’m not walking home alone tonight

I know it’s hard to picture
me by anyone’s side
But we’re gonna make it fit, dear
you’re not an only child

And I’m not walking home alone tonight
No you’re not going home alone tonight

ARIA’S SOUL

Losing, the fight, but I won’t.
Call it, that because you don’t.
It’s easier not to swim when you can float.
So I’ll lie here, my arms across the moat.

And Aria’s soul is winning again.
Aria’s soul is winning again.

And heaven help me now.
Yeah heaven help me now.

Doubts approach, and pass like unmarked cars.
But you’ll still, read me in the stars.
‘Cause it’s easier not to think when you can quote.
So I’ll stand by all the words I wrote.

And Aria’s soul is winning again.
Aria’s soul is winning again.
Aria’s soul is winning again.

And heaven help me now.
Yeah heaven help me now.
Yeah heaven help me now.

6PM ON TIARA ST AND SPRING WON’T COME TOO SOON

(Instrumental)

IN HER TIME

When the flat road climbs
without a sign
You'll know it's not your time
When the page isn't read,
but you're already spent
You'll know its not your time

When the sun goes down,
but the job’s not done
You'll know its not your time
When your eyes are soaked,
but your mouth’s still dry
You'll know its not your time

She'll take the wheel
Read you to sleep
Finish the job
and fill your wine

In her time
In her good time
In her time
She will always have a good time.

LED HART

Hold my hand,
I’m going again
Where the strips of sand,
come to an end

I swear to god,
it’s at the bottom
I saw it shine,
through water eyes

In I fall
In I fall, again

You wash up slow,
when you sink so low
This lead heart’s a find,
so easy it’s a crime

In I fall
In I fall, again

In I fall
In I fall, again
How I depend

How I depend

WINSOME LONESOME by TOBY BURKE
(2004/2005)

"I bought a Tascam Porta-07 4-track tape machine from a friend before I left Melbourne and packed it for Los Angeles, determined to figure out how it actually worked. Eventually I found a reprint of the manual and I was setting up in the tiny basement laundry of the house I shared with my brother, recording all sorts of stuff. The tape machine made it with me to London some years later.

The songs on Winsome Lonesome all fell into that machine somewhere along the way. “Won’t Be Bought” was written in Melbourne (as were “Cigarettes” and “30 Seconds” I think), but I recorded it and “Long Face” in LA. The basis of “Walking Dream” and “Time Can Break Your Heart” were written on the same afternoon, sitting amongst the boxes when my wife and I were moving to London.

All these songs just hung about really and never quite worked with the band. All the other records I’ve done were written as a fairly specific group of songs, these just gathered over time and wouldn't leave. I’ve always liked singer-songwriter records with no drums, sometimes the lyrics just get through to me better that way – albums like Paul Kelly’s “Post” and Springsteen’s “Nebraska” (also recorded on a Tascam 4-track) - I guess this is my contribution to that little sub-genre."

WALKING DREAM

(Instrumental)

CIGARETTES

I gave up cigarettes, on the night that we met.
I’d never tried to in the past, my friends said it’d never last…
They were right about you, but I don’t smoke.

I gave my car away, on the day you came to stay.
Parked it by Dad’s old shack, he said “Son, you’ll want her back…”
He was right about the car, but not about you.

It’s not about you. I can’t tell you I’m in hell.
Not about you. It was only you who fell.
Not about you. And you can’t even tell…
Why I tried
Or why you lied
Or why you cry, to this day. You can’t say.

I learned to dance all night, so I could hold you tight.
Left my friends at the bar, they said “This has gone too far…”
They were right about you, but I still dance.

It’s not about you. I can’t tell you I’m in hell.
Not about you. It was only you who fell.
Not about you. And you can’t even tell…
Why I tried
Or why you lied
Or why you cry, to this day. You can’t say.

STOP ME

Will you take me, to that old café?
The same one, that you know I hate.
Cause the waiter, always remembers your name.

A coffee and a water, is all that you’ll let me order.
Cause you got to be up and on your way.

But you always stop me, right on time.
And you always held me, right on the line.
Yeah you always stop me, right on time.

Tic-Tac-Toe and I’m a fool.
For even walkin’ home with you.
Another game I shoulda learned in school.

But you always stop me, right on time.
And you always held me, right on the line.
Yeah you always stop me, right on time.

An’ only little boys, go running in the dark.
An’ only little boys, don’t finish what they start.
But not only little boys, go and take it all so hard.

But you always stop me, right on time.
And you always held me, right on the line.
Yeah you always stop me, right on time.

ELEVATED TRAIN

Six days a week I drove these streets, to the factories that I owned.
From tinted glass, blindly I passed all the tiny homes
Of the good men that I paid
Who ride the elevated train.
But I was a big man in my day, such a big man in my day.

Now since my heart failed me in March, a strange hell I endure.
Cause I look on down and through this town, with a view so very pure.
Because now every night and day
I ride the elevated train.
But I was a big man in my day, such a big man in my day.

Sweet Mrs Jones you look so alone, as you dress to leave your room.
Your son is in bed from a poison it’s said, that I always knew
Pumped through all my workers veins,
Just like the elevated train.
I was a big man in my day, such a big man in my day.

But I was so poor…. Yeah I was so poor…
For not knowing you.

Old Arthur Gore you lived without more than the jacket on your back.
At least once or twice you asked me so nice, for the shelter of my shack.
Now I see you dying in the rain,
Under the elevated train.
I was a big man in my day, such a big man in my day.

But I was so poor…. Yeah I was so poor…
For not helping you.

Daughter of mine I raised you so fine, that you’ll never know.
Of all the things my wealth could bring, there’s nothing left to show
But the cruel words that they say
On the elevated train
“Yeah, he was no big man in his day… just a bad man in his day”

And I was so poor…. Yeah I was so poor…
For not loving you.

But I was a big man in my day, such a big man in my day…

THE WAY OF WINSOME LONESOME

(Instrumental)

TIME CAN BREAK YOUR HEART

Roads move slow, and friends won’t show
In time to play their part.
But I know, that as it goes…
Time can break your heart.

Words work fine, but I can’t find
The ones to hit their mark.
They come so slow, that it shows…
Time can break your heart.

When you’re all out of luck
Or you’re all out of love.
Sometimes you’ll find, you’re only out of time.

Places and names, of the ones may change
Who brightened up your dark.
But the light must go, and so it shows…
That time can break your heart…
Yeah time can break your heart…
Time can break your heart.

LONG FACE

There’s a long face calling my name.
Yeah it’s a long face, calling my name.
Heaven or hell, well who can really tell?
When there’s a long face, calling your name.

Just the wrong place and the wrong game.
Just the wrong place and the wrong game.
Well I’ve done some bad, but even good times feel sad,
When there’s a long face calling your name.

There’s a strong wind, blowing this train.
There’s a strong wind, slowing this train.
Well I could jump it and run, but you’ll never make it home,
When there’s a long face calling your name.
A long face calling your name…

WHICH TRAIN’S SHE ON?

(Instrumental)

30 SECONDS

He smoked those chalk sticks, cause the filters made him cough.
I’d give him one of mine, but he’d sooner break it off.
And he drove in third gear, cause it always made the most noise.
And did those silly tricks, just to impress the boys.

But I know, I should be riding on home.
Yeah I know… not to call this home.

His mother blames me, but his dad still gets me a beer.
His brother hates me, but he still keeps me near.
And he never said those words, cause he didn’t wanna hurt.
But I’ll bet now your sweet name, is every second word.

And I know, I should be riding on home.
Yeah I know… not to call this home.

But weekends come and go…
And parties move slow…
But there’s thirty seconds when I’m alone…

And I know, I should be riding on home.
Yeah I know… not to call this home.

The news had said it was the six-pack in my lap.
But I think we both know it was a little more than that.
And some kids had said it was just a stupid bet.
But I’m poor and holding you will never ease my debt.

And I know, I should be riding on home.
Yeah I know… not to call this home.

But new friends come and go…
And you’re still the only girl I know…
But there’s thirty seconds when we’re alone…

When I know, I should be riding on home.
Yeah I know… not to call this home.

WON’T BE BOUGHT

You know I won’t be bought,
And I’ll play until I’m caught.
You’ll do me wrong,
Won’t let me put my records on.

But I know you’re wrong,
So I’ll play this song.
You’ll call me names,
Now you know that none of this’ll change.

So I’ll play until I’m caught,
Cause I won’t be bought.
